Tip # 10 - Call an Audible

If it's not working, try something else. If your plan won’t work, do what the quarterback does, “call an audible.” What worked yesterday is not working today. Einstein’s definition of insanity is “doing the same thing over and over again expecting different results.” Even great companies fail because they don’t adapt or do things differently in changing times. As Darwin said, “It is not the strongest of the species that survive, nor the most intelligent, but the one most responsive to change.” This is one of those times.

It’s time to look at your business. What’s not working and what do you need to do differently? If no customer is coming in, maybe you need to go out and find some. Is there another market you could target that you are currently not focusing on? Should you hire an outside salesperson? Are there services or products that you could add to your mix to sell more to the fewer customers you have? Maybe you are spending too much time trying to find new customers. Should you be doing more marketing to the customers that you already have?

If your people are discouraged and not productive, maybe you need to do something; like training, or changing your compensation system, or changing your measurement system, or building their competencies, or putting back some fun in their jobs. What would capture their hearts?

It’s time to get innovative and think outside the box. Respond proactively to these economic times. I highly recommend you bring your people together. Set goals together, brainstorm together, strategize together and ask provocative questions. Tap into the power of your team. This is the time of the year to put your goals and plans together. Ask your team, “What can we do better or differently? What would improve the results of this company?”

What’s most important are the questions you ask. Questions are always more important than the answers. All innovations come from questions. It is the most important leadership skill: the ability to ask provocative questions. Who knows? Those questions may lead to an audible. That audible could change your results!
